"To Bring Memory Back" edition 2006-2007
SŁUPSK - Zespół Szkół Ponadgimnazjalnych Nr 4
Who are we
High School Complex in Słupsk
Why we do this project
We became interested in the matter when last year a part of the wall which used to entour the synagogue (today nonexisting) was reconstructed, and a memorial tablet was unveiled in front of our school.
Jewish community in our town
Since the World War II the Jewish community doesn’t exist in Słupsk. During the Kristallnacht, in 1938, the synagogue was set on fire and the people decided to leave even before the war, or were sent to the death camps by the occupant.
What we do in the project
Within the framework of our project we would like to explore the Jewish culture, learn about its tradistions and customs, we woud like also to meet the people who witnessed the history of the Jews in Słupsk.
We were present at the ceremony of the anniversary of the Kristallnacht, and we had a meeting with the grandson of the last Rabbi of Slupsk- Amos Cohen.
We have met with Ms Isabell Sellheim, who lived in Słupsk before the war. She told us a lot about Jewish-German relations in the town, and the burning of the synagogue, which she saw with her own eyes.
We also invited Mr Stanisław Szewczuk, who wrote a book about the village of Rachodoszcze and shared with us his memories of his Jewish friends and neighbors.
What we are going to do next
We want to recreate a Hanukkah evening. We’ve received a lot of help from Ms Jolanta Krawczykiewicz of Rondo Theater, and from the vicepresident of the city, Mr Ryszard Kwiatkowski.
