Middle School No.5 in Olsztyn

What we do in the project

Between May and June 2006 the Borussia Cultural Community realized a project entitled "Painting the Forgotten. Jewish landcape of Olsztyn through the eyes of students of Middle School No.5". During the art lessons the students have been painting the Bet Tahara and the cemetery in Olsztyn, as they looke like before the war. They were also asked to imagine the future look of those places and to represent it on their paintings.
During this contest the students explored the past of their town and learned how it changed during last 60 or more years. About 160 works were admitted, and at the end of the school year the contest was resolved and the winers were awarded and the works presented to the public during the vernissage hosted by the artists from Węgajty Theater.
In November 2006 an exhibiton will be organized in the building of local library, during which the students will meet the witness of history- Mr. Gimla.
The students of Middle School No.5 will participate in the artistic events, history lessons on Olsztyn Jews, visit the places related to Erich Mendelsohn. The entire project wil be resumed in a form of albums created by the students during another contest.
