2005-08-05 Ziebice - International Camp of Jewish Students

On August the 5th 2005, on the initiative of the Foundation, an international camp for Jewish students has begun. It was co-organized by the Polish Union of Jewish Students, the World Union of Jewish Students and the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. 45 young people from Israel, the United States and Poland arrived at Ziębice. This year’s motto of the meeting is “To rebuild and to bring back”. The camp will end on August the 11th.

The choice of Ziebice was not accidental; in the town there is one of the very few surviving synagogues in the Lower Silesia (built c. 160 years ago) and a picturesque cemetery with several 19th century matzevot. A group of Jews from USSR have settled in Ziębice after World War II.

On August the 5th 2005 a Shabbat was organized in the Ziebice synagogue. It was attended by the Jewish students, Mr. Piotr Kadlcik, the President of the Union of Jewish Communities in Poland, Mr. Ignacy Einhorn, the President of the Jewish Community of Wrocław, and 15 guests from Ziebice, including the Mayor and the President of the Town Council.

On August the 7th 2005 young people started the clean-up works at the Ziebice Jewish cemetery. They were supported by a number of volunteers from Ziębice and by the members of the Friends of Ziębice Society “Ducatus”.
The Foundation is especially grateful to the “Ducatus” Society (with special regard to Mr. Jerzy Kopacz) for their organizational help and engagement in the realization of the project.
