Kłodzko, ul. Bohaterów Getta, dolnośląskie
The Jewish cemetery in Kłodzko in Bohaterow Getta St. was established in the 19th century. There are 100 tombstones and 300 graves left - the oldest matzeva is from 1816. The cemetery was still used after World War II and was finally closed in 1974. From July 18th to 25th, 2005, on the initiative of the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland, the first stage of renovation work was carried out. A group of 25 voluntaries from “Antyschematy” Association under the supervision of Jerzy Fornalik cleaned up the cemetery. Due to those activities, several dozen historical matzevot were uncovered (dated back to the second half of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century). Many partners were engaged in the project – we would like to thank especially Mr. Antoni Galuza, the headmaster of the European Union Elementary School No. 6 in Klodzko, who made the school rooms accessible to the volunteers for free. The project of the cemetery cleanup attracted attention of the local mass media, the residents and the authorities of Klodzko. Mr. Janusz Rudnicki, the town's Deputy Mayor, who visited the cemetery, offered financial support and promised to continue it in 2006. The Municipal Council offered help to protect trees in the necropolis’ area. The next stage of the work began in the middle of September 2005, with support of the Foundation for European Understanding “Krzyzowa”. In 2006, the “Volunteers in Service for Historical Monuments” project's second edition began, during which 6 volunteers from Poland, Germany and the Czech Republic renovated the Jewish cemetery. In 2006, the necropolis was listed in the register of historical monuments. More information on the cemetery: |
