Students from the Complex of Schools in Byczyna have been taking care of local Jewish cemetery for several years. They clean it up twice a year. During these works, they collect litter, cut down bushes, shrubs and little trees. At the end of September 2005 two school classes (IIc and IIf) went to clean up the cemetery.
Below you can read their own impressions: Immediately after getting to the cemetery we started our work. It was difficult to find any traces of our last visit. We had to do everything from the beginning because the plants grew up amazingly quickly. We divided ourselves into few groups, mostly depending on the tools we had, and begun to clean. We worked efficiently – removing the weeds, cutting down bushes and little trees, tidying up the headstones, boys were burning the branches. In case the fire broke out, we had the cans with water prepared. Soon, everything was cleaned up and the neglected monument became neat and tidy.
In a short time we will have to come here again, because the cemetery requires constant care. The herbicides would be very useful, but, unfortunately, we don’t have any sponsor that could afford to buy them. For the time being our efforts must be enough to maintain the cemetery in the best possible condition.» back
