On November 19th, 2011 at the Zamosc 'Synagogue' Center of the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland for the lecture of Dr. Adam Kopciowski 'Jewish underworld in the interwar Zamosc' took place. The lecture was co-organized by the Foundation and the Center for Jewish Studies of the Maria Curie-Sklodowska University in Lublin.
During the lecture Dr. Adam Kopciowski presented a specific and colorful criminal underworld of Zamosc, which according to archival sources and press reports of the time consisted of local Jews in fairly large percentage. This picturesque underworld of Jewish crimes in Zamosc had gone to past however, tragically halted by the events of World War II. The descriptions of this past world rarely found their place in academic studies, or in testimonies and memories from interwar period. For this, and many other reasons, this interesting and colorful aspect of city’s history is worth introducing to Zamosc inhabitants.

In his research he Dr. Kopciowski focuses mainly on the history of Jewish community in Lublin Region in the 20th century, particularly on the period of the Holocaust and postwar years. » back
