A march of remembrance for our neighbors, the Jews of Zamość.
The Zamość ghetto functioned from April 1941 due to a regulation issued by the Germans. It was located in the area of Nowa Osada (around Nowy Rynek, Partyzantów and Lwowska Streets) and was liquidated on October 16, 1942.
On that day, the Germans gathered almost all the remaining Jewish residents (about 4,000 people) in the New Market Square. They rushed them on foot to the transit ghetto in Izbica (last stop until the extermination).
The road from Zamość to Izbica was marked by the bodies of the murdered. On October 16, 1942, the history of the Zamość Jews who had lived in Zamość from 1588 ended.
Let's meet on the eve of the 79th anniversary of the liquidation of the Zamość ghetto. The March will start at October 15, 2021 at 5:00 p.m, on the square next to the former synagogue in New Town at Reja St. Then we will go to the "Zamość Starówka" train station, where we will light candles of remembrance for our Jewish neighbors. Agnieszka Klimczuk and Janusz Kupczyk, City Councilors of Zamość, the "Synagogue" Center of the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage and Marek Kołcon from "Jewish Zamość" invite to participate in the event.
