The "Synagogue" Center of the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland would like to invite you to a meeting with Elizabeth White and Joanna Śliwa, authors of the book "The Counterfeit Countess."
The Polish edition was published by REBIS Publishing House. Thanks to which we will have the honor to host the authors in Zamość. "The Counterfeit Countess" tells the story of Janina Mehlberg, a Jewish woman who, posing as a Polish countess, saved thousands of lives in German-occupied Poland. As „countess Janina Suchodolska" she worked for the Central Welfare Council of the Lublin district. She provided food and medicine to prisoners, negotiated releases with the Germans and served in the Home Army.

About the Authors:
-Elizabeth "Barry" White worked for many years at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, where she was a historian and the director of research at the Center for the Prevention of Genocide. Previously, worked at the Department of Justice investigating and prosecuting Nazi criminals and other human rights violators.
-Joanna Śliwa is a historian at the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany in New York, where she also manages academic programs. She teaches Holocaust and Jewish history at Ken University and Rutgers University and works as a historical consultant and researcher. Her first book, Jewish Childhood in Kraków: A Microhistory of the Holocaust, won the Ernst Fraenkel Prize from the Wiener Holocaust Library in 2000
