2023-10-16 Commemoration of the Holocaust in Zamość

We kindly invite you to the events commemorating the extermination of the ghetto and the Jewish community of Zamość.

On October 16, 1942, the Jewish district in Zamość was brutally liquidated. Traditionally, to commemorate these tragic events, we organize a March of Remembrance.
We will meet on OCTOBER 16, 2023, at 5 p.m., in the square next to the former New Town synagogue at MIKOŁAJA REJA 11 St. in Zamość. (square next to the kindergarten no. 2).
We will march to the monument at the new Jewish cemetery at Prosta street.

On Tuesday, October 17, 2023, we invite you to a lecture by Marek Kołcon, dedicated to the history Zamość ghetto. The meeting will take place at the FODŻ "Synagogue" Center, at Pereca 14 st. in Zamość at 5:30 pm.
The ghetto in Zamość was established on May 1, 1941. The German authorities ordered the Jews in Zamość to move to the district of New Town.
Its topography, history and functioning will be presented to you by MAREK KOŁCON, a historian from Zamość, a teacher involved in many Polish-Jewish history educational projects, who runs the Facebook page Żydowski Zamość - Jewish Zamosc.

We want to commemorate our Jewish neighbors who have been co-creating Zamość for generations, as well as people from other cities and countries who ended up in the Zamość ghetto. Most of them were murdered in german death camps. 81 years ago, on October 16, 1942, the Germans ordered the survived Jews to walk to the ghetto in Izbica. This march, which cost many people their lives, is the symbolic end of the presence of the Jewish community in our city.

The initiative is open to everyone! We do not send individual or official invitations. We ask for the presence of all the people who want to commemorate the Holocaust and the tragic events from WWII.

We will soon announce further events as part of the commemoration of the Holocaust of Jews in Zamość.

Social Initiative to Commemorate the Holocaust of Jews in Zamość:
Marek Kołcon, historian
Janusz Kupczyk, City Councilor of Zamość,
Daniel Sabaciński from the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage
