2010-05-11 POLAND - USA
We are happy to inform that the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland together with the Peacework association www.peacework.org organizes a study tour to Poland for a group of American students from the Hendrix College (Arkansas, USA).
The tour will take place in May 2010 and will be the first one prepared together by the Foundation and Peacework within the framework of a project which aim is to promote knowledge about Jewish heritage and history in Central and Eastern Europe among American students. The project enriches the participants' experience of history, informs their memory and understanding of the Holocaust, as well as political and cultural changes that have transpired since the World War II in that part of Europe. Students will also be involved in a voluntary service of restoring a Jewish cemetery. We believe that the volunteer activities reinforce the memories and life-long changes in attitudes and cultural sensitivities.
During the tour the Hendrix College students will visit Warsaw, Lublin and Cracow, as well as Zamosc and Szczebrzeszyn – cities and towns that used to be vibrant centers of Jewish culture in Poland. They will also go to German Nazi concentration and extermination camps like Treblinka, Majdanek, Belzec and Auschwitz-Birkenau. Furthermore, the participants will take part in a volunteer service of restoring a Jewish cemetery in Szczebrzeszyn.
We invite other interested organizations to contact Peacework in the US (steve@peacework.org ) about developing a similar project with the Foundation in Poland.
