The ‘Synagogue’ Center of the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland invites for the series of events commemorating the 70th anniversary of extermination of the Jewish community of Zamość.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of Operation Reinhard – action carried out by Germans between 1942 and 1943, which aim was the extermination of European Jewry. Its implementation began in March 1942 with deportations to death camp in Belżec, and later to camps in Sobibór, Treblinka and Majdanek. From the total number of 6 million victims of the Holocaust over 1,5 million Jews were murdered within the framework of Operation Reihard.
Operation Reinhard brought also the annihilation of the Jewish community of. Deportations from the town began in April 1942 and on October 16th, 1942 the ghetto underwent final liquidation.
In October and November 2012 the following events will take place at the ‘Synagogue’ Center to honor the memory of Jewish people of Zamość:
October 16th and 17th
‘A Jewish Child’ conference in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the liquidation of the Zamość ghetto organized in cooperation with the Polish-Jewish Literature Studies of the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.
October 24th
Meeting with Truda Rosenberg, survivor and the author of a book To experience a miracle. A story of Truda Rosenberg, organized in cooperation with Museum – Memorial Site in Bełżec.
November 9th
‘Teaching about the history and culture of Jews in Poland’ seminar, organized on the International Day Against Fascism and Anti-Semitism in cooperation with the ‘Well of Memory’ Association and the Center for Jewish History and Culture of the State Higher School of Vocational Education in Zamość.
The seminar will be also a summary of the project Creating a team of cultural animators for the ‘Synagogue’ Center, supported by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland.
