linia 2013-05-30 THE 'SYNAGOGUE' CENTER IN ZAMOSC

Between May 8th and 30th, 2013 the ‘Memory Project’ exhibition by Roz Jacobs, a New York City-based  artist, was presented at the ‘Synagogue’ Center of the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland. The exhibition was prepared in cooperation with the Galicia Jewish Museum www.galiciajewishmuseum.org

The ‘Memory Project’ exhibition was born from Roz Jacobs, a New York  City-based  artist’s need to recapture something that was destroyed – the life of a Jewish boy, Kalman, her relative, who was separated from his family, never to be seen by them again.

‘In painting Kalman’, says artist Roz Jacobs, ‘the sadness and loss became stronger, but so did my uncle’s presence. And in coming close to feeling the pain, I also feel the presence of the lost one’.

The exhibition addresses universal themes of memory and loss through the story of one family, through the story of one boy, Kalman, Roz Jacobs’s uncle who she never met. The artist has created an entirely original art installation that illustrates the transformative power of art and remembrance and makes personal and immediate the tragedy of the Holocaust.

Agnieszka Holland about the project:
‘The Memory Project: the film, the paintings, the whole exhibit is an extraordinary endeavor. An attempt to resurrect the memory of a murdered boy: fragments of a tale told by his sister - an American mother and grandmother today; 2 photos that survived; his portrait painted over and over by the author, like a mantra - all of this is made to dig up out of oblivion the fragile reminiscence of a being’.
