Dozens of matzevot fragments were found nearby the fence of the Jewish cemetery in Szczebrzeszyn in March 2015. We thank the anonymous persons who returned the tombstones and invite all those who know the location of other matzevot or its fragments to contact our Foundation.
The Jewish cemetery in Szczebrzeszyn had been established in the 16th century and was used until the World War II. Over 400 matzevot have survived there. In 2012 the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland and the Heritage Foundation for Preservation of Jewish Cemeteries – Avoyseinu have erected a fence around the cemetery grounds.
