The Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland is pleased to report that it has received 80 000 PLN from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage toward the conservation of the fourth and final exterior wall – the northern wall - of the lovely 18th century baroque-style Simche Bunem synagogue in Przysucha. Although the Ministry’s contribution is only half the hoped-for amount necessary to complete this fourth and final stage, it will permit realization of important and necessary elevation work as well as brickwork repairs and replacement.
The Foundation is eager to start focusing its attention on the synagogue’s interior renovation (with stunning colorful frescoes and imposing four-column stone bimah); however, the interior work must wait until additional funds are secured from private donations to fill the shortfall from the Ministry’s contribution. The Foundation’s own contribution to-date has been 65 000 PLN. Private donations are both welcome and encouraged.
From 2012 – 2014, FODZ carried out the first three stages of this large rehabilitation project: three of the four external walls of the synagogue were renovated and reinforced, the bimah secured and professionally supported, and the metal roof repaired.
The longterm plan is for the renovated Przysucha synagogue to be open to the public, to serve the needs of visiting Jewish descendants and religious pilgrims, and for hosting educational and cultural conferences, events, and activities.
Help save this unique and precious survivor of Przysucha’s Jewish history!
The Przysucha synagogue project is supported by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland within the framework of the National Heritage program, priority 1 Protection of Historical Monuments, as well as by the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland.
