On June 29, 2022, a dedication ceremony of the reconstructed fence of the new Jewish cemetery in Markuszów took place. This event was an opportunity to commemorate the Jews of Markuszów. The reconstruction of the fence was possible thanks to the cooperation of FODZ with the following partners: an American organization Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland; the European Jewish Cemeteries Initiative (ESJF) and the Matzevah Foundation. Implementation of the project was also supported by the local authorities of Markuszów, headed by the Mayor, Mr. Leszek Łuczywek. The ceremony on June 29 was attended by, among others: a representative of the descendants of the former Jewish community of Markuszów, Dr. Dan Oren; Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich; Bishop Mieczysław Cisło; Mayor of Markuszów, Mr. Leszek Łuczywek; Secretary of the Markuszów Municipality, Mrs. Bożena Tkaczyk-Żurawska; Dr. Steven Reece, President of the Matzevah Foundation; ESJF representative, Ms. Sophie Pownall.
Reports from the ceremony in Markuszów on June 29 were also published by regional media, including TVP3: https://lublin.tvp.pl/61021458/pamieci-markuszowskich-zydow?fbclid=IwAR1Wfb5FmZg90pqjGA4pPdvOd5Lk8JUL7BX7mvbEMRhUUj_SQgY7CUTcZOk
We take this opportunity to express our thanks to FODZ partners for their cooperation in the reconstruction of the fence.
During the meeting with representatives of local authorities, which took place at the seat of the Municipal Office after the ceremony of consecrating the reconstructed fence, the prospects for further cooperation of the above-mentioned partners were discussed, including the commemoration of places where in the past the old Jewish cemetery in Markuszów and the synagogue were located. We are convinced that further cooperation in this area will also result in raising the awareness of local residents about the history of Markuszów and its surroundings.
