On July 6, 2022, representatives of: the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland, Piotr Puchta and the Macewa Foundation, Dr. Steven D. Reece, met at the Municipal Office in Drohiczyn with the Mayor of this town, Mr. Wojciech Borzym. The subject of the meeting was to take joint actions to protect the Jewish cemetery located in Drohiczyn, at Aleja Jaćwieży, plot no. 1669. Before the meeting on 6 July, representatives of the descendants of the former Jewish community of Drohiczyn, represented by Mrs. Lena Dragicky, and permanently residing in Poland, represented by Mrs. Aleksandra Maria Kuriata, expressed their interest in undertaking joint activities leading to the permanent protection of the cemetery area. Particularly noteworthy is the support of the local authorities of Drohiczyn for the protection of the Jewish cemetery, which in recent years has found an expression in the form of: placing the necropolis on the route of the local tourist trail and placing an information board at the entrance to the cemetery, presenting in a concise way the centuries-old coexistence of the local Jewish community with Polish neighbors.
The date of establishment of the cemetery is not known - it was probably established in the nineteenth century, no later than in 1855. In 2017, on the initiative of Mrs. Lena Dragicka, in cooperation with the city authorities and local activists, FODŻ set up a monument in honor of the victims of the Holocaust at the cemetery. In the cemetery there are about 20 matzevot made of granite field stones, with inscriptions in Hebrew. The oldest identified matzevah stands on the grave of Tzvi son of Eliyahu, who died on March 13, 1855. » back
