In the past week, FODZ partners from the following organizations: JewishGen, Friends of Jewish Heritage in Poland, the Matzevah Foundation, as well as from the University of Szczecin carried out an action to clean up the area of the Jewish cemetery in Przysucha. Local self-government authorities, headed by the Mayor, Mr. Tomasz Matlakiewicz, also joined in the clean-up of the area by providing equipment to remove mowed grass and self-seeds. During the action of cleaning up the area, fragments of Matzevot located in the cemetery were also collected and cleaned. During the period of cleaning up the cemetery area, a solemn commemoration of the former Jewish community was also organized. The completion of the cleaning works in the past week was accompanied by an ecumenical ceremony, which took place in Przysucha with the participation of spiritual representatives of the Jewish and Christian communities. Participants of the clean-up also had an opportunity to learn about symbols on tombstones, the general state of Jewish cemeteries in Poland after the Holocaust, efforts to preserve them from both a communal, political, and Halachic perspective.
We take this opportunity to express our deep appreciation and thanks to all FODZ partners who made a meaningful contribution to the clean-up of the cemetery area in Przysucha.
