linia 2006-11-24 WYSOKIE MAZOWIECKIE

On November 23, 2006, a ceremony finalizing the first stage of restoration works at the Wysokie Mazowieckie Jewish cemetery took place. The project is conducted by the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland, thanks to the support of Mr. Michael Traison and Mr. Marvin Brooks. A monument comemorating the Jewish community of the town was erected at the cemetery, the first part of the fence surrounding the cemetery was built, the whole area was cleaned up and the matzevot that had been lying on the ground were put back in the upright position.
Guests who attended the ceremony also visited a local school, where Mr. Michael Traison handed awards to students who participated in a contest concerning history of the Jewish community of Wysokie Mazowieckie.

First prize was awarded to Paweł Giełachowski, for his essay "Jews of Sokoły", second to Jakub Mrozek, for his work "My Jabłonka". Third prize went to Agata Brzósko, who wrote "From the Pages of History".

All essays may be downloaded (in Polish only) by clicking here.

We would like to express our gratitude to Mr Ryszard Łukasz Flenc, Mrs Malgorzata Kamińska-Pliszka and Mr Tomasz Ostrowski from the High School in Wysokie Mazowieckie.
