The Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland and the PJCRP are preparing a project of restoring the Jewish cemetery in Tykocin (podlaskie province). The project was acquiescently accepted by the town’s authorities, who declared ready to join its completion.
Before the World War II Tykocin was one of the most important centers of Jewish culture in Poland. A magnificent baroque synagogue built in 1642 (today a museum) and many buildings which belonged to the pre-war community still exist. The landmarks of Jewish culture combine into a harmonious architectural complex, one of the best preserved in Central Europe.
