The police are investigating the case of devastation of the historical Jewish cemetery in Świdwin. Unknown perpetrators have destroyed, on February 28th 2007, 12 tombstones and damaged 2 information boards. The police were informed by the pastor of the local Pentecostal Church. The information about the incident, along with the appeal to the local community for help in identifying the party responsible, was published in local and national press, and was aired by local TV station. Furthermore, the police asked the headmasters and pedagogues of local schools to discuss and investigate the problem with their students. A similar request was addressed to the priests of local parishes. The police are currently leading an inquiry among known juvenile offenders, and are looking for possible Nazi or Anti-Semitic groups operating in the area. The investigation is hindered by the fact that the cemetery is located in the deep wood, at a notable distance from any buildings, or roads.
In the next few days a reward will be offered to anyone who will help to find those responsible for the devastation. The case is a top priority one, as the Foundation was assured by the representative of the Voivodeship Police Commander in Szczecin.
