On the 20th of April 2005 the Foundation has signed an agreement with the authorities of the town and district of Lesko. The town will be allowed to use the plot were the demolished mikveh had formerly stood and which today is occupied by fire control facilities indispensable for the town’s safety; the Lesko synagogue will also remain the town’s property. In exchange for these real estates the Jewish side has received three substitute plots.
The cooperation between the Foundation and the Lesko authorities will be continued while organizing various cultural events, such as, e.g. periodical celebrations held in the Lesko synagogue and also while conducting the project of restoring the Lesko Jewish cemetery. The Mayor has also declared that the town will accomplish all the necessary cleanup works before the tourist season starts. The agreement signed with the Leszno authorities is a model solution that not only solves the problem of restitution of the Jewish properties, but also serves the cultural dialogue and the development of the region.
