On 21st June 2005 the Foundation regained the ownership of the Jewish cemetery in Leżajsk, where the famous tzadik Elimelech is buried. Every year, on the anniversary of his death, Leżajsk is visited by thousands of Chassids.
Elimelech of Leżajsk (a son of Eleazar Lipman and a brother of Zusja of Annopol) was a student of the Great Maggid Dow Ber of Międzyrzecze. Elimelech’s words: Abraham heard the Lord say to him: “Thy reward shall be exceedingly great”. He understood it in sense of material rewards, and he pleaded for a son to inherit them. And the Lord explained to him: “It is not material wealth which you should desire as an inheritance for your seed. Look up towards Heaven, and think of celestial riches. Such should be the heirloom you transmit to your son” are the motto of the Foundation.
The Leżajsk cemetery is one of the most important Jewish cemeteries in Poland. For this reason the Foundation will closely cooperate with the Chief Rabbi of Poland and other religious authorities from all over the world in order to protect it and guarantee all pilgrims undisturbed access to Elimelech’s ohel.
