We are glad to inform you that a memorial tablet commemorating the Jewish society of Lezajsk (podkarpackie province) was installed by the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland in Lezajsk, one of the towns participating in the Chassidic Route Project. The tablet funded by the Foundation was placed on one of the poles of the cemetery wall, surrounding among others the grave of the famous Tzaddik Elimelech. The following inscription in Polish, Hebrew and English was carved on the tablet: Jews settled in Leżajsk (Lizhensk) at the beginning of the 16th century, and for four centuries contributed to its economic and cultural development. In the 18th century Leżajsk became an important centre of the Chassidic movement, gathered around the famous Tzaddik Elimelech. In 1939 there were 3000 Jews living in Leżajsk. After the outbreak of World War II the Germans deported some of them to the territories occupied by the Soviet Union. Those who remained were forced to live in a ghetto and in 1942 they were sent to extermination camps. In memory of the Leżajsk Jews. Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland, 2007.
