On Tuesday, January 13, 2009, a meeting took place in the Office of the City of Suwalki between the representatives of local authorities and the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland. The matter discussed was the cooperation between the city and the Foundation for a better protection of the local Jewish cemetery, which soon will  be regularly monitored.
The cemetery was devastated by unknown perpetrators in October 2007. The removal of the results of their action took an entire year and was carried out thanks to the involvement of local students and the city authorities.
