Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish
Heritage in Poland organized a ceremony unveiling the monument
commemorating the Jewish community of the city of Slupsk (pre-war
Stolp).
The monument was founded by the descendants of Rabbi Max Joseph,
the Rabbi of Slupsk over the period of 1902-1936, and erected by the
Foundation in cooperation with the Municipality. It is situated at
Niedzialkowskiego 6 St., at the site where the Slupsk synagogue had
been located, before it was destroyed by the Nazis in 1938, during
Kristallnacht. The monument is a reconstructed section of the
synagogue’s fence, with memorial plaques in Polish, English, German and
Hebrew.
The ceremony was attended by Rabbi Max Joseph’s family, Rabbi
Robert Samuels, representatives of the Jewish community, the President
of the City of Slupsk and his Deputy, the Consul General of the
Republic of Germany, a representative of the local Bishop and by the
CEO of the Foundation. A letter send by the Ambassador of the State of
Israel to Poland was read. The ceremony was also witnessed by a crowd
of Slupsk citizens and students from local schools.
The monument, erected in the very center of the city, is an
important testimony of engagement in the task of commemorating the
Jewish community, which for centuries had been an integral part of
Slupsk’s social, religious and cultural life.
