The best Holocaust-related reportage 2007-01-20
In January 1945 the inhabitants of Czerwionka-Leszczyny saw a horrible sight: a column of human shadows in striped uniforms, begging for water and bread, forced to walk westbound under an escort of the SS-mann. The news of the transport from Auschwitz were spreading with the quickness of the lightning; many prisoners had escaped, finding their safety in the houses throughout Leszczyny. 62 years passed since those events, and the creators of the project “On the Jewish trail in Upper Silesia” invited the students of the 4th Middle School in Czerwionka-Leszczyny to realize a little project of their own. more »

Wilhelm Szewczyk- a poet, writer, critic and German litterature translator born in Czuchow (today part of Czerwionka-Leszczyny) became a local living legend. In his books he managed to preserve the climate of the pre-war Czerwionka, miners settlement where catholics, evangelics and Jews lived in peace. His works were inspiration for the young artists, who tried to recreate this marvelous lost world. On 14th of December the commission awarded the winners of the contest and opened an exhibition of the works. more »

Through the old parts of Łęczna 2007-01-05
Till the 1970's Łęczna was a small town, inhabited by about 1500 people. The building of a large coal mine in Bogdanka resulted in displacing of the heart of the city to its suburbs. The Old Town, with its market squares and small workshops slowly started to fall apart. The old brick and wooden houses were replaced by the modern blocks. The owners of the old houses on the Old Town Square mostly died in the World War II, and the still unresolved regulatory issues don't allow the revitalization of this part of the city. more »
