On October 28 the inmates from the Prison Facility in Chełm carried out cleanup works at the local Jewish cemetery. The action was realized within the framework of a joint project of the Central Board of Prison Service in Poland and the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland. The agreement on cooperation between the two organizations was signed on June 19, 2009.
The Jewish cemetery in Chelm was established in the 19th century and destroyed during the World War II by the German Nazis. Part of the cemetery was built over after the war and the rest was cleaned up and commemorated by the Nissenbaum Foundation. There is a lapidarium erected on the cemetery grounds and about 50 matzevot.
