linia 2011-01-17 WARSAW - NEW YORK

It is our sad duty to report the passing of Rabbi Mendel Reichberg, who expired on January 14, 2011, in Brooklyn, NY.
Rabbi Mendel Reichberg was born on October 7, 1922 in Bochnia, Poland, in a Chassidic family of Bobower Tzaddik. He survived the Holocaust in the Bochnia ghetto, German concentration camps in Plaszow and Auschwitz. He went through the March of Death and was not liberated until 1945, on the territory of Germany. After the end of the war he moved to New York and became an active member of the Chassidic Bobower community of Boro Park, NY. Since the 1970’s he was actively involved in rebuilding and preserving of Jewish Cemeteries in Poland. He personally renovated 18 of them, including the Jewish cemetery in Kozienice. He was also running a travel agency which allowed thousands of Chassidic Jews to visit the graves of Tzadikkim in Poland.
In 1997 his efforts were recognized by the President of Poland, who awarded him with the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
Since 2004 he was cooperating closely with the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland. He was for us an example of determination in activities leading to commemoration of Jewish cemeteries and mass graves.
May his memory be a blessing for us.
