On Monday, May 15, 2017, a ceremony of returning of the books stolen by the Germans during World War II from the Polish Jewish communities took place in the National Library inWarsaw. Foundation New Synagogue Berlin – Centrum Judaicum and the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin handed over 33 books in total. The books were delivered in presence of the representatives of the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek in Berlin - Sebastian Finsterwalder and Christiane Kleist-Fiedler- and Stephan Kummer of Berlin’s Centrum Judaicum and the CEO of the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland. The action was coordinated and supported by the Centre of Historical Research of the Polish Academy of Science in Berlin, represented by Malgorzata Quinkenstein.
The books were identified by a team of specialists of the Centrum Judaicum and Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin. It is being estimated that over one million of books still await anaysis and identification in the collection of the two institutions.
