Between the 5th and 12th of September 2005 a group of German students from the Society of Christian-Jewish Cooperation in Dresden will start clean-up works at the Jewish cemetery in Szczebrzeszyn. It will be a part of the Signs of Penitence Project – Service for Peace. The Jewish Cemetery in Cmentarna St. in Szczebrzeszyn was established in the 16th century. Over 400 matzevot has survived there and many of them date back to the 16th century. The oldest matzevot are to be found near Cmentarna St. During World War II the cemetery was the place of mass burials of Jews murdered by the Nazis.
