On June 20, 2008, a ceremony of opening of the
Jewish Heritage Trail took place in Bialystok. Participating was, among others, the CEO of the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland, one of the partners of the project. The Jewish Heritage Trail is a social initiative coming from a group of volunteers and cooperators of the Foundation of the University in Bialystok, UNIVERSITAS BIALOSTOCENSIS, whose goal is to reconstruct the history of the Jews in Bialystok, to show the relations between local Poles and Jews between the years 1658-1945, to document and mark places related to the Jewish Community of Bialystok, to show the Jews as part of the multinational society of the prewar Poland, to popularize the elements of Jewish culture and tradition and to help dismiss the Polish-Jewish stereotypes.
The project is addressed to students of the schools and university of Bialystok, as well as the citizens of the town, participants of the international exchanges (among others with Israel), descendants of the Jew living in Bialystok before the war, and tourists.
