On August 5, 2008, the Regional Monument Conservator made an inspection of the mound of Mordechai Anielewicz, located at Mila St. in Warsaw. The mound was built of debris of the tenement house at Mila St. 18 (today the corner of Mila and Dubois). Hidden in its inside are the remains of a bunker - the common grave of Mordechai Anielewicz and other ghetto fighters who, surrounded by the Nazis, have committed suicide.
The resting place of the leaders of the ghetto resistance movement was commemorated shortly after the war on the initiative of the Warsaw Jewish Community. Until today, though, the monument was not protected by the law, therefore the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage, acting both on its own behalf and on behalf of the Jewish Religious Community in Warsaw submitted a request for placing it on the Monument Register.
We hope that it will happen soon.
