Between May 6-7, 2009, celebrations related to the 70th anniversary of the Kindertransports - evacuation of Jewish children from Germany, Austria, Free City of Danzig (Gdansk), Czechoslovakia, Latvia, Estonia and Poland to England between 1938-1939 took place in Gdansk. Thanks to the action about 11 thousand Jewish children were saved from the incoming war. About 130 of them came from Gdansk in four transports sent just before the outbreak of the World War II.
Within the framework of the celebrations many events were planned, among them the unveiling of a Kindertransports monument in Gdansk and the unveiling of the new matzevot on the graves of Rabbis Elchanan Aschkenasi and Meir Posner.
Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland issued a congratulations letter to the Jewish Religious Community of Gdansk on that occasion.
