linia 2009-05-20 OSTROLEKA

On May 19, 2009, the representatives of the Jewish community, among them Chief Rabbi of Poland Michael Schudrich and the CEO of the Foundation for the Preservation of Jewish Heritage in Poland, visited again Ostroleka to discuss the matter of road works going on at the grounds of the non-existing Jewish cemetery. The Rabbi thanked the President for having stopped the works for two days in order to conduct a survey and both sides agreed that it is imperative to avoid the further desecration of the burial site and that the works should follow the ‘Respect for the dead, care for the living’ principle. The Rabbi was also happy with the way the human remains found at the construction site are now treated and with the idea of giving them a proper burial at the cemetery grounds near the monument dedicated to the memory of the Jews of Ostroleka.
Another subject discussed was the possibility of using the already existing excavations made several dozen years ago for heating installations to host the new underground infrastructure, which should prevent further damage to burial site. A taskforce will be created to analyze the matter. Among its members will be the representatives of the Union of Jewish Religious Communities in Poland.
